Kings Advance - Penner the OT Hero
(5/23/12) In case you've been living in a cave, we'll break the news that the Kings are off to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993. Dustin Penner's goal in OT last night gave L.A. a 4-3 win over the Coyotes to take the series in five games, and the Kings will now face the winner of the Eastern Final between the Rangers and Devils.
Penner is one of the most pleasant fantasy surprises of the postseason, as his series-clinching goal gives him 10 points in 14 playoff games. If you picked him (or any of his teammates), well done. We actually pegged Penner as a sleeper coming into the year, but he left us with egg on our face, managing just 17 points in 65 starts in the regular season. But through three rounds he's reminding us why we had high hopes for him with the Kings in the first place, finally coming through with inspired play and clutch performances, and becoming a key piece of the puzzle in the LA's run to the final.
In addition to Penner, 19 players have now cracked double-digit points in the playoffs, including five other members of the Kings - D. Brown, Kopitar, M. Richards, J. Williams, and Doughty - all of whom tallied on the score sheet in Game 5...
