Rick DiPietro Done for the Year
Standard Spin: Islanders' goalie Rick DiPietro is set to have sports hernia surgery that will likely cause him to miss the remainder of the season. He's already sat out 17 games with the injury, and this latest news is the death knell on his fantasy value... if there was even any left.
New York's most reliable goalie this season Al Montoya is recovering from concussion symptoms himself, and the Isles have been forced to turn to Evgeni Nabokov to man the crease. Nabokov has now made 10 straight starts, going 4-6-0 over the stretch, but his uninspired play leads us to believe he's just keeping the seat warm until Montoya can go.
And speaking of Montoya, he's been back at practice this week and is inching toward a return. When he's ready, we assume the Islanders will hand him the keys again as the #1, with Nabokov sharing some of the work. (Jan.13)
