Keeping Tabs on the Combine: Yakupov, Galchenyuk, Grigorenko, Murray
(5/25/12) The annual NHL Scouting Combine took place this week, as the best prospects eligible for the upcoming 2012 Entry Draft got a chance to show what they can do. Keeper and dynasty league owners will want to especially take note of the results, but don't put too much emphasis on the numbers that come out, it's the on-ice performance that's still most important.
With that said, the combine can definitely reveal some new information and it's certainly worth paying attention.
What we look for is the outliers. Is there a player who blows everyone away in a particular area? Or is there a player who posts a dismal number in a certain drill? When a player is overly strong or weak compared to the field, that's when we go back and study some more to see if there was something we missed. Otherwise, we're mostly just looking for reasonable performance, and then trusting what our eyes see on the ice.
