Time to Sell High on Lupul?
Standard Spin: Claude Giroux, Henrik Sedin, Phil Kessel, Steve Stamkos, Joffrey Lupul, Daniel Sedin, Evgeni Malkin... one of these things is not like the other. These are the top 7 NHL scorers as we near the halfway mark of the season, and by far the biggest surprise on the list has to be Joffrey Lupul. Lupul's 4 point night in the Leafs' 7-3 dismantling of the Lightning Tuesday gives him 44 points in 39 games. Let's assume he puts up one more to make it an even 45 at the turn, good for a 90 point pace. That's a pretty staggering output, and we have to think he'll slow down at least a little in the second half... maybe even a lot. We always advocate a "buy low/sell high" strategy, and there are plenty of normally reliable superstars that struggled in the first half that might be available via trade - think Zetterberg, Ovechkin, Perry, Thornton. Of course, Lupul could keep this act up, and the under-achievers could continue to stink, but more often than not the cream eventually rises. We smell an opportunity here... (Jan.3)
